2nd Annual Occoneechee Council US Army Fort Bragg Special Ops SERE Wilderness Survival Weekend Oct 12-13

Our summer session for the Occoneechee Council Orange District Merit Badge Pow Wow will be sponsored by the US Army Fort Bragg Special Ops SERE Training Team and will be held at Camp Mackall, just outside Fayetteville from Saturday, October 12th thru Sunday, October 13th.

The Pow Wow will offer Scouts one (1) Merit Badges during a 2-day long extended overnight session: Wilderness Survival. Any Scout that attends the the Pow Wow and successfully completes all the requirements with the Merit Badge Counselors during the 2-day overnight Pow Wow, will earn the Merit Badge.

During this amazing weekend event where Scouts will be earning our Wilderness Survival Merit Badge taught by the same leading Special Ops Training Officers that train the hard-core Rangers that serve our fine country. The training will take place over 2-days at the US Army Special Ops SERE (Surve Evade Resist Escape) Survival Training Center. Scouts will be camping on base at Camp Mackall, Ft Bragg, NC. We will be focussing in 7 distinct areas of survival techniques: Shelter, Fire, Traps, Signaling, Water Procurement, Plant Identification and Navigation. This Merit Badge Pow Wow is comprised of  multiple SERE survival sessions over 2-days, starting Saturday, October 12th 1pm until Sunday, October 13th 9am. The Scout MUST attend both (2) days and camp overnight in a self-made shelter (no tent) to complete the Pow Wow – do not send application if you are not able to commit attendance BOTH days and OVERNIGHT.

The cost per Scout is $40 to cover the cost of supplies. All proceeds from this event will go to the Army’s Army Children of the Fallen program. Food WILL NOT be supplied by the Pow Wow. Scouts MUST bring drinks and rations for lunch, dinner and snack on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

Any registered Boy Scout may attend the Merit Badge Pow Wow, this session will be limited to the first one-hundred (100) Scouts. Applications received by Council after October 7th must be approved by District Program Chair.

Adult leaders must send in application to attend, max 1 adult per Troop.

Saturday registration begins at 11:30am, the Pow Wow will start promptly at 1pm, please try your best to be on time.

Application DOES NOT guarantee acceptance into the Pow Wow. Applications are required to be paid in full and at the Council Office prior to October 12th. Applicants will be notified of acceptance 48 hours prior.

Application DOES NOT guarantee Pow Wow will happen on the given date. All applicants must respect and understand the fact that these SERE trainers are active-duty US Army soldiers and if the are called to duty the Pow Wow weekend, the protection of our country will become priority over the Pow Wow. THE POW WOW WILL TAKE PLACE ON FORT MCKALL IN THE US ARMY SURVIVAL TRAINING FACILITY. FROM US 1 IN ABERDEEN, TAKE 15/501 TO THE 5 STAR FOOD MART AT ASHEMONT ROAD, TURN RIGHT ON ASHEMONT CROSS TWO BRIDGES, ASHEMONT ROAD TURNS INTO ARMY ROAD, TAKE ARMY ROAD TO A FORK IN THE ROAD WITH A US ARMY CHOPPER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FORK, BEAR LEFT, CROSS OVER LITTLE MUDDY LAKE, THE SURVIVAL COMPOUND WILL BE A RESTRICTED AREA/ROAD ON YOUR LEFT, MAKE THAT LEFT AND FOLLOW TO THE HEADQUARTERS, ABOUT 1/4 MILE DOWN THAT GRAVEL ROAD. ALL PARTICIPANTS SHOULD PLAN TO BRING THEIR OWN FOOD FOR LUNCH AND DINNER SATURDAY AND BREAKFAST SUNDAY. YOU MAY BRING WHATEVER TOOLS YOU REQUIRE TO PREPARE YOUR FOOD- NO FOOD, COOLERS OR STOVES WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE DISTRICT OR SERE. THE CAMPSITE WILL BE WALKING DISTANCE FROM YOUR CAR. IF A SCOUT WOULD LIKE EARN THE WILDERNESS SURVIVAL MERIT BADGE, THEY WILL ONLY BE ALLOWED A SLEEPING BAG AND A TARP IN THE SURVIVAL CAMPING AREA. ADULTS OR SCOUTS NOT DESIRING THE MERIT BADGE WILL CAMP IN A SEPARATE AREA AND MAY BRING ANY DESIRED CAMPING GEAR.

ALL SCOUTS MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE TRAINED ADULT FROM THEIR HOME TROOP WITH THEM WHILE THEY ARE AT THE POW WOW – UNLESS PREVIOUSLY APPROVED BY THE POW WOW CHIEF. TROOP LEADERS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING ALL REQUIRED BSA HEALTH/MEDICAL FORMS FOR THE SCOUTS IN THEIR TROOPS. ANY SCOUT PRE-APPROVED TO ATTEND SOLO MUST SUPPLY ALL REQUIRED BSA HEALTH/MEDICAL FORMS TO POW WOW CHIEF IN ORDER TO STAY SOLO WITHOUT THEIR TROOP LEADERS ATTENDING.
