According to geologists, these mountains are remnants of a chain of islands crushed between the collision of the North American and the African continental plates. They may be the oldest mountains in the US, but are greatly eroded to their present height of approx.1000 ft.
We’ll be heading north on Dutchman’s Creek Trail for approximately 5.5 Miles.
We’ll look for a place to pitch our tents along the junction of Dutchman’s Creek and Uwharrie Trail.
We’ll take the Uwharrie south for approximately 5.3 miles back to the parking lot.
I created a map of the route we will be taking: http://alltrails.com/maps/uwharrie-short-option. I’ve also attached a GPX file that can be imported to Google Earth and most other mapping software.
