Troop 505 Mount Mitchell Hiking Expedition Specs Sep 25-27

ABOUT

Troop 505 will be camping and hiking at Mount Mitchell State Park over the weekend of September 25-27th. At 6,684 feet above sea level Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak in the Eastern U.S. The highlight of the weekend will be hikes along the Black Mountain Crest. Grouped by ability Scouts will complete 5 or 10 mile hikes on rugged challenging trails with daypacks.

TRAVEL

We will be leaving Chapel Hill Friday afternoon at approximately 5 pm. Drivers should contact Janet Eaker regarding their availability.

GEAR

Prepare for a backpacking outing. Be prepared for colder wet weather. See web site for equipment guidelines.

MEALS

Friday dinner – eat before you arrive
Saturday breakfast – breakfast by patrol
Saturday lunch – by patrol to be eaten on the trail
Saturday dinner – by patrol
Sunday breakfast – by patrol

Grubmasters are responsible for Saturday and Sunday meals (4). Budget $4 per person per meal. Lunch will be eaten on the road Sunday

SCHEDULE

Friday September 25 (Day 1)
5:00pm: depart from American Legion Post 6
7:300pm: arrive at Lake Norman State Park group site #E
8:00pm: set-up camp
10:00pm: LIGHTS OUT

Saturday September 26 (Day 2)
6:30am: WAKE UP, BREAK CAMP, EAT
7:30am: take 1 hour drive to Mount Mitchell State Park campground
8:30am: arrive at Mount Mitchell State Park campground
10:00am: Start the 4,0 mile loop hike across Mount Mitchell peak
12:30pm: stop along the trail for lunch
4:00pm: arrive back to Mount Mitchell State Park campground, relax
6:00pm: eat dinner
11:00pm: LIGHTS OUT

Sunday May 4 (Day 3)
8:00am: WAKE UP, BREAK CAMP, EAT
9-11am: enjoy Mount Mitchell
11:00am: depart for American Legion Post 6
12:30pm: stop for lunch along the road
5:00pm: Arrive home at American Legion Post 6

Take 40 West to Marion, take exit 86 (226) toward MARION/SPRUCE PINE. Take 70 and 80 to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Head South on the Parkway for 11 miles to the State Park at Mile Marker 355. Take 128 past the Park office to the tent-only campsites near the Summit.
